SHOPPING

Shopping in Venice is a unique experience, while major shopping centers are only a couple of miles away, Venice is best known for it's eclectic specialty shops, art galleries and boutiques. Many visitors liken it to SoHo in New York. There are four shopping districts in Venice ... each with it's own personality. Most interesting are Abbot Kinney Boulevard, and Main Street.

Abbot Kinney Boulevard, named after Venice's visionary founder, is a great place to spend a Sunday afternoon. The street is both casual and cosmopolitan.

Located a five blocks east of the beach, between Venice Boulevard and Main Street, Abbot Kinney is home to an eclectic array of shops, art galleries, furniture stores and restaurants ... there are over 50 establishments on the mile long block ... plus some new artist-in-residence studios.A sample of what's in store includes antique and collectible furniture (sometimes rare pieces from Charles Eames whose studio was on Abbot Kinney), outstanding designer clothing, Fabulous 50's furniture, folk art, toys, and home accessories. Then there are also funky coffeehouses and five star restaurants. Abbot Kinney has a character all it's own.

Main Street maintains much of the old town flavor of Venice with an updated flair. Over 100 shops and restaurants extend into Santa Monica. While there are a number of antique shops and designer furniture establishments, there are also popular clothing stores such as Armani Exchange, Patagonia, The Gap and CP Shades. Plus there are many small shops that are fun to explore. Great restaurants are sprinkled along the street.

On the beach, the Venice boardwalk is packed with retail establishments, restaurants and coffeehouses.

There are also merchants and artists selling their wares along the beach side of the boardwalk. And there are some great finds for the locals who can separate themselves from those stores that cater to visitors. Just take your bike or a leisurely stroll and enjoy a day at the beach. Only a few blocks north in Santa Monica there are 4 and 5 star hotels that have beach bars, lunch and light dinners ... plus their own shops. Both Venice and Santa Monica are spending millions this year to enhance their beach frontage.

Lincoln Boulevard is a major commercial street that bisects Venice. Lincoln offers a number of service businesses ... primarily for locals. There are also some very unique furniture stores as well as other retail establishments.

Adjacent to Venice in Marina del Rey, Culver City and Santa Monica are major malls, home improvement centers and exclusive shops. For serious shoppers, Beverly Hills' Rodeo Drive is only 20 minutes away.
